Decaffeinated coffee plants can be grown commercially in cultivation to produce naturally caffeine-free coffee beans, which have a high commercial value. The decaffeinated coffee varieties we breed typically remove 97% or more caffeine from the coffee beans. This decaffeinated coffee is suitable for people whose bodies are less able to accept caffeine.

  • Genetic knockout technology

Decaffeinated coffee does not keep the drinker up all night, but it also lacks the "real" coffee taste. The chemical process used to remove caffeine from coffee beans often leaves traces of chemicals that deteriorate the complex aroma and flavor of coffee beans. Using knockout technology, we have successfully "turned off" the caffeine production genes in coffee crops, avoiding the expensive, wasteful, and polluting process of decaffeination. Using genetic engineering techniques, we have effectively applied them to breed decaffeinated coffee by regulating critical enzymes in the caffeine synthesis pathway.

  • RNAi

The RNAi technology we offer is essential for coffee gene editing to obtain high quality decaffeinated coffee varieties. RNAi is one of the common means of obtaining sequence-specific gene knockouts. It is a means of introducing double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) into target cells to attenuate the function of endogenous genes. The simple, rapid, and inexpensive nature of RNAi has led to its widespread use in plant genetic engineering and crop improvement. We have now successfully obtained decaffeinated coffee with RNAi technology.
