Preventing and Managing Coffee Disease

The consumption and production of coffee are increasing yearly, and coffee occupies the first place among the main beverages of the world population. This has high economic value and brings significant economic benefits to coffee growers. However, coffee is affected by geography, climatic conditions, temperature, and different varietal factors in cultivation, resulting in various diseases that can easily occur in cultivation.

Lifeasible is committed to plant science research and has many years' experience in coffee disease research. We have identified coffee pathogens and coffee disease resistant varieties for effective use in coffee disease prevention and control research. To support coffee disease research, we provide coffee researchers with advanced technical methods, and innovative and flexible solutions.

Disease Control in Arabica Coffee

Effects of coffee on diseases

  • Infestation of coffee plants, affecting coffee production.
  • Causes a decrease in coffee quality, affecting coffee drinking quality.
  • Causes a reduction in coffee production and an increase in coffee prices, which is detrimental to the stability of the coffee market.
  • Causes significant economic losses to coffee growing regions or coffee exporting countries.

We offer various coffee disease control solutions

We offer various technologies for coffee disease control

  • Rapid molecular detection of coffee diseases

Multi-gene molecular phylogenetic analysis for the identification of a species is complex and time-consuming and is limited in practical application. By establishing a system of simple and rapid molecular diagnostic techniques for serious coffee pathogens or quarantine species, we contribute greatly to identifying coffee disease species.

  • Multi-gene sequence analysis

Coffee pathogenic species are diverse and rich in genetic polymorphism. However, the classification of coffee pathogenic species has been confusing. It is difficult to make accurate taxonomic identification by simply using morphological, physiological, and pathological characteristics. With the wide application of molecular biology technology, partial sequences of multiple genes, such as ITS sequence analysis, can be effectively used to identify coffee pathogen strains. This identification result will be useful in the screening of coffee disease resistant varieties.

  • Research on the pathogenicity of coffee pathogens

Identifying coffee disease pathogenic species composition, distribution, and differentiation of pathogenicity can be the basis for effective coffee disease control and disease resistance breeding. We identified the pathogenic bacteria isolated from coffee tissues by morphological and ApMat gene sequence comparison and phylogenetic evolutionary analysis. We were able to determine the pathogenicity of the obtained disease strains by using the isolated leaf inoculation method.

  • Breeding of coffee disease-resistant varieties

Based on knowledge of genomics, molecular markers of gene structure and function, and the use of genetic engineering-related technologies, we have been mining coffee for resistance genes that can control coffee disease resistance, introducing them into coffee breeding research, and effectively breeding various of disease-resistant coffee varieties. For example, we have bred a variety of coffee varieties resistant to rust disease.
