Fatty Acid Content Testing in Pollen

Fatty acids are long aliphatic hydrocarbon chains containing a carboxyl group at one end, as shown in the diagram below. Depending on the degree of saturation of the hydrocarbon chain, they can also be classified as saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The total lipids in pollen account for about 5% to 10% of the total weight of pollen, of which unsaturated fatty acids account for 60% to 91%, much higher than the content in other animal and vegetable fats. Essential fatty acids are nutrients necessary to maintain normal physiological functions in the human body. These essential fatty acids can only be taken from food and are the basis of material required for normal human development and normal physiological function. The analysis of the content of unsaturated fatty acids in pollen is also an important indicator for assessing the nutritional value of pollen.

What We Offer

Lifeasible offers a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method to determine the type and content of fatty acids in pollen, which is compatible and highly accurate. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry are the basis for accurately determining fatty acids in pollen and ensuring low detection limits. All pollen fatty acid tests are carried out by experienced testing experts through a standardised testing process while adhering to strict Qc standards. A selection of Lifeasible's fatty acid tests is listed in the chart below. In addition, you can also contact our experts for consultation and communication to achieve customised fatty acid testing.

Service Flow

Fatty Acid Content Testing in Pollen

1. Sample Requirements

  • Fresh flowers, >5g;
  • Pollen from fresh flowers or dried pollen from different families, >1g.

*Quick freeze storage with liquid nitrogen minimises leakage time of plant samples at room temperature.

*Experimental samples are non-returnable; please make your own backups. Control and experimental groups need to be set up prior to sampling, and it is recommended to have more than 3 replicates per group.

*No restrictions are placed on plant species. For species with special requirements or rare species, please contact our staff for more information.

*For experiments requiring special testing, please feel free to contact our staff for a bespoke testing service.

2. GC-MS

The advantages of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are high sensitivity, accuracy, and throughput, making it ideal for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of individual substances in mixtures.

3. Fatty Acid Content Analysis

The analytical report for the fatty acid test for pollen will be written by experts and include raw data, analytical charts, and recommendations for nutritional studies on pollen. You can always get in touch with our experts for a customised analysis report.
