Collection and Identification of Root Secretions

Root secretions have important roles in soil structure formation, soil mineral weathering, soil nutrient activation, promotion of plant nutrient uptake, root-soil nutrient movement, and environmental stress mitigation. Since the components of plant root secretions are complex, their types and amounts vary with plant type and inter-root environment. As the interaction area between plants, microorganisms, and soil, the inter-root zone is the material basis and core of the root-soil interface micro-ecosystem. The study of root secretions is an important part of the research fields of soil formation, plant nutrition, chemosensory effects, biological pollution stress, and environmental pollution remediation.

What We Offer

Lifeasible uses different plant culture methods, including soil culture, sand culture, nutrient solution culture (hydroponics), and agar culture, depending on the environment in which the roots of the plants are cultured.

  • Soil culture method
  • Sand culture method
  • Nutrient culture method
  • Agar culture method

The most common method for collecting root secretions is root dipping, but Lifeasible has also introduced several new root secretion collection systems for more accurate and rapid continuous collection of root secretions without damaging the root environment. Root secretions are complex and need to be separated and pretreated before they can be used for testing and analysis. We offer extraction, resin, and chromatography techniques.

The identification and detection of organic acids are difficult because of the complexity of the substances in root secretions and the low content of organic acids, so we provide analytical methods for the determination of organic acids in root secretions, including HPLC, GC-MS, fluorescence spectrometry, capillary electrophoresis, colorimetric, spectrophotometric and enzymatic methods.

  • HPLC (good separation of low molecular organic acids, high sensitivity, fast analysis, accurate determination, and continuous injection, easy to operate)
  • GC-MS (instantaneous equilibrium between mobile phase and stationary phase, high separation efficiency, and simultaneous determination of a variety of organic acids, and small sample requirements, high sensitivity)
  • Fluorescence spectrometry (simple, fast, and efficient)
  • CE (low dosage, fast and accurate determination of organic acids in plant roots and soil)
