Herbal Identification and Quality Assessment

The identification of herbal medicines is the prerequisite and foundation for studying the varieties and quality of herbal medicines, setting standards for herbal medicines, and finding and expanding the sources of medicines. The four traditional methods of identification of herbs are basal origin identification, trait identification, microscopic identification, and physical and chemical identification. Among them, the basal source identification, trait identification, and microscopic identification of herbal medicines belong to the measurement and evaluation of the external conditions of herbal medicines, while the physical and chemical identification mainly focuses on the chemical components contained in herbal medicines and belongs to the evaluation and measurement of the internal indicators. The theoretical basis of traditional identification methods is based on the analysis of trait characteristics of taxa, which are expressions closely related to the environment. From a molecular genetic point of view, differences in species phenotypes should be traced back ultimately to differences in genotypes, i.e., differences in DNA sequences.

What We Offer

Lifeasible provides professional herbal identification and quality assessment services by combining the latest DNA barcoding technology with NIR spectroscopy, UV spectrophotometry, IR spectroscopy, thin-layer chromatography, HPLC, HPLC-MS, fingerprinting, gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and traditional methods of matrix identification, trait identification, microscopic identification, and physicochemical identification.

  • NIR spectroscopy can detect minor differences in tissue structure and chemical composition of the same herbs from different origins and herbs of the same genus, and through chemometric algorithms, it can achieve clustering and discrimination of origins, analysis of adulteration of precious herbs, changes in chemical composition and moisture before and after concoction, and sulfur fumigation, etc.
  • DNA barcoding technology is used for the rapid identification of species by comparing a common DNA fragment. In the experiment, only one or a few gene fragments can be used to accurately identify most of the species in a certain genus, family, or even dozens of families, and the identification process is more rapid and can identify a large number of samples in a short time with high repeatability and stability.

We Do Better

  • We have the most comprehensive platform for herb identification and quality assessment, and the technology is constantly being updated. We can automate the identification of species quickly and efficiently by strictly enforcing the standards required by the project during the experimental process.
  • Our clients can centrally view and download the results and progress of their projects through our internal internet and information platform, keeping track of project progress and monitoring the quality of project completion in real-time.
