Detection of Adulteration in Spices
Some spices are high-value products, and unscrupulous suppliers may adulterate low-value goods for financial gain. While spice adulteration, in many cases, is not harmful to health, it can have serious economic consequences and harm consumers.
Lifeasible uses Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) to quickly and effectively identify whether a spice has been adulterated, playing an imperative role in maintaining the authenticity of spice ingredients, consumer rights, and spice market stability.
Analytes
- Products. Garlic powder, cayenne pepper, paprika, onion powder, black pepper, cinnamon, etc.
- Adulterants. Talcum powder, tomato peel, walnut shell, cinnamon, buckwheat, millet, starch, papaya seed, chili, etc.
Our platform
We offer Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) based spectroscopy, which can be quickly and effectively used to identify adulterated spice components by analyzing the main components of spices. FT-NIR technology offers many advantages over classical wet chemistry and chromatography methods for spice identification. In addition, the FT-NIR technique can be used in the analysis of spice adulteration not only to identify the type of adulterants but also to estimate the concentration of adulterants without the need for a complicated calibration process. The FT-NIR technique we utilize has been successfully applied to determine adulterants in yam powder, adulterants in black pepper powder, adulterants in cinnamon powder, and the identification of adulterants in various herbs.
Our technical features
- No sample preparation is required. Simply pour the sample into a glass vial or beaker, as NIR light can penetrate glass.
- Ideal for inhomogeneous samples. NIR light can analyze the sample surface and deep inside the sample with more representative and accurate results.
- No waste, no chemical reagents. NIR analysis methods are contamination-free and waste-free. No chemical reagents or gases are required, making it very economical.
- High sample throughput. FT-NIR analysis is fast, allowing high-throughput samples to be measured in the laboratory and providing real-time analysis during process monitoring.
